This was one of the little moments in the book that really spoke to 
me. But it only works if you know the whole story---and most readers 
wouldn't. It's one of JKR's "what war does to families" moments.

JKR gave us some back story on Dean Thomas's family several years 
ago. It may be on her site, I'm not sure. Dean's mother didn't know 
he was a wizard. He was killed by DEs because he wouldn't join them. 
>From his wife's point of view, he just walked out. I'm not sure if 
his name was Thomas, or if Dean was given his step-father's name.
