> How on earth did "chaise longue" become "chaise lounge" in America?
At first, I thought it was just a common seller's spelling error,
like the greengrocer's apostrophe, but I've heard it pronounced as
lounge in tv programmes and furniture commercials. It doesn't even
make sense that way...

Carol responds:
Because you "lounge" on it? What does "longue" mean, anyway, and does
it rhyme with "tongue"?

I suppose "chaise lounge" strikes you the way "bedroom suit" for
"bedroom suite" strikes me, but I've never seen "chaise lounge"
spelled any other way.

Carol, who would have thought that "chaise longue" was the error!
