Magpie:
I think she means she thinks your way is the right way--your
intention is to genuinely wish the person well based on what they
need. If you don't know what they would want you to say, you just
try to be as general/neutral as possible, and if they give you more
information you can get more specific.
The opposite is wishing somebody a greeting when it's really about
your own agenda, wanting them to take notice of what *you* say
because that's what *you* want to hear no matter what their personal
situation (known to you or not) might be.
