And, as you suggest, it leads to this peculiarity of switching to plural 
forms.

CJ (Now):
Don't have time to look it up, but I was surprised, contrary to my 
assumption that it was a PC thing, to see the singular "them" cropping 
up in English texts much earlier than I expected, including one or two 
nineteenth century texts.

When I get home from work I'll try to find the references.
