I think this doesn't depend on the language and the translation, but on how much a reader knows about England (I'm not sure that every single American knows about this forest either :-)). If the reader knows what "Forest of Dean" (on whatever language) is, he'll know what Hermione is talking about, and if not - I don't know, it's individual, I guess. I personally knew nothing about Forest of Dean when I read DH, but somehow I didn't think about Dean Thomas at all :-). I didn't know what this place was, but I looked it up later, on the second reading :-).
