Um, er, I don't know about kids these days, but I'm pretty sure that
most of us on this list studied it in school. "Orth-" relates to
correctness and "graph[y]" to writing. Orthography is the use of the
correct letters to represent words--in other words, spelling.
You're thinking of ornithology, which, to my knowledge, has never been
a standard subject for eighth-grade students.
