Yes, I have heard that one.

There are of course a number referring to the roads and 
their infrastructure. Ones which come easily to mind are:

Pavement=sidewalk
Roadway=pavement
Dual carriageway=divided highway?
Motorway=Interstate
Level crossing= grade crossing?
Tramway=street car/trolley car?

the last refers to a railway/road crossing. I'm not sure if I've 
got the US versions correct where I've put a question mark. 
Corrections welcome!
