Bearing in mind that this is written by an English author, it's the first.

It is very common for certain growers around the UK to open their land 
to visitors to choose their own produce to save the owner the trouble of 
doing it themselves.

You will often see signs along the roadside such as "Pick Your Own 
Strawberries" or "PYO apples" or even plain "PYO". It tends to be fruit 
more often than not but you can go and visit vegetable growers as well.

It's usually offered by smaller farmers and growers, the bigger producers 
being tied to supermarkets etc.
