Actually that is looking pretty possible.

The Independent United Order of Mechanics is looking a possible source 
for these symbols. I'm still investigating that further though. So far I 
can't find any evidence they ever got to Australia, but perhaps an 
individual member did even if the Order didn't. Or it could be an offshoot.
