I admit I haven't read the book because everything I've heard thus far tells
me much of what you said.  In my humble opinion, if a book doesn't have at
least one redeeming character or someone you want to feel encouraging
thoughts about, the book doesn't get read by me.  Writers have fallen into
writing such dysfunctional people; it's beyond my ability to understand.
Not everyone in this world is like this, and a book that seems to deal with
only that type of person is lacking.
