I guess like most people I assumed that James and Lily were in
Gryffindor. Not only because Harry is but also because that's the only
house we really know anything about.
That started me thinking about something else I've been wondering about:
whether the teachers are heads of the houses which they were in when they
were in school. For example, Professor McGonagall is head of Gryffindor
because she was in Gryffindor as a student. And the same for Snape
(he fits the Slytherin profile so well!).
But then it occurred to me that it might not work that way and that
there might be an explanation for why Snape hates James and friends so
much. There are 5 new male students each year, right? Who live in the
same dorm, etc. What if James, Sirius, Remus, and Peter were not only
at school with Snape but in the same year and house? What if Snape
hates them all because he was the only one who was excluded from the
group? Does that make sense?
