I agree that this ancestor/descendant discrpancy does raise some
interesting questions. I have one theory (spoiler ahead for those who
haven't read book 3).

Maybe Voldemort had (or created) a heavy-duty version of the
time-turner(?) McGonagill gave Hermione. But instead of going an hour
backward for each turn, this one went back a century (or millinium). He
used it to go back in time, where he became Slytherin's ancestor.

But my real thoughts are that this is a typo. If Dumbledor really did say
"ancestor," wouldn't Harry have asked how this could be? Unless he had
too much on his mind. Only time will tell.
