I deeply agree about the way that the world has crushed the imagination
out of the lives of many people. and i'm sure there are many who say
forget imagination, and art and dance and music--forget that, its not
important. But everytime this comes up I am reminded of a true story,
(that happened to be a sight passage on an english exam!) and it talks
about someone's experience in a concentration camp.
A group of the imprisoned decided to stay up and share with those
around their joys and passions--literature, operas, dramas, plays, and
songs. Many of the fellow prisoners scoffed at them for spending their
energy staying up all night when they could be resting. But what happens
in the end is that all that were living to survive, those that did not
spend a few hours reminising about their joys... were the one's that died.
Why do you think they burnt books? so that they could squeeze the
imagination and with it the hope of something better.
So more likely than not, those that don't enjoy the book, really aren't
'reading' it. They've been too busy forgetting imagination that they
haven't learned how to really read- to understand and envision what is
being said in a few words and spots of ink.
