I remember when I first moved to Boston I kind of thought it would be fun
to work in a bookstore-- I am a booklover, right? What coudl be better?

The best offer I got after i made the round of interviews was $6 per hour,
with no benefits at all.

I cannot believe that managers think that they can offer such a slim
wage and so little committment to their employees, and yet also expect
their employees to come in brimming with knowledge and enthusiam. I am
hardly the greedy type, but the fact is $6 per hour is NOT a livable
wage. I turned that one down and tried my hand at waitressing instead.

We also have a poetry bookshop her in Boston which is kind of a
landmark, but whose proprieter is notorious for being very abusive to
her employees. I was warned by many "If you really love petry, don't work
there!" The proprieter herself said to me, rather stiffly "I never hire
customers because I usually find that they quickly stop being customers
when they work here." (Uhmmmm, yeah.... thanks for the tip, lady!)

With attitudes like this running around, I can EASILY imagine a pissed
off or exhausted employee putting twenty Harry Potter books on the
shelves before turning in her resignation.

Sucha shame, but really it is probably bad management that is at the
root of it all.
