<<This is closer to Boh than Boze -- the X, which is really an 's', is
pronounced when the next syllable starts with a vowel as in Beaux Arts
(bozart).>>

yup.. i'd have to agree!

> I also don't know how to make a phonetic rendition of the French
'batons' except to put 'batoh' - I know that it ISN'T 'batonz'.

<<Maybe bah-taww ? The 'on' is pronounced as what I have heard called
a nasalized O. If the next word starts with a vowel, it will get the
S stuck on front of it. La belle de Beauxbatons, ou est-elle? La belle
duh Bohbahtaww, soo ay tell? >>

Hmm... well I it might sound similar to that like there they don't
even pronounce the "n" at the end but they actually do. What happens
with "n" is they have a elongated "n" like "une" where you stretch
the n out so that no one can miss it or you have the "n" like in "un"
where it is soooo short people tend to miss the sound sometimes... In
this case it's the very short "n" but what happens to the ending of
"baton" is that at the very very end it almost sounds like the "uh"
sound ...which if listened to carefully would be your very shortened "n"
Bo (as in Bo Jackson 'bo knows baseball'... sorry.)
Ba
Taw-uh

well whatever...
