Can I try it in English money...?
1 knut = 2p
1 sickle = 29 knuts = 58p
1 galleon = 17 sickles = '9.86

So, the wand is about '66, the Triwizard prize is just short of '10,000
and Dobby's Hogwart's salary is '9.86 a week (but Dumbledore wanted to
give him '98.60). The newspaper in Book 1 is 10p, and silver unicorn
horns are '200 or so.
Sounds about right to me. The omnioculars are typical of large-scale
sporting events, where the punters are expected to pay '3 for a bottle
of pop, and '5 for a programme.
I wonder of they have notes, or just coins? I wouldn't fancy clanking
round dark alleys with 1,000 gold Galleons in my pocket. Fudge drops a
bag of a thousand Galleons on Harry's bedside table at the end of GoF,
which would undoubtedly smash it to firewood.
Oh well...
Neil
