I don't think it's particularly uncommon for authors who are writing a
series of books to insert background information into each book as they
are written. I enjoy reading fantasy writer Anne McCaffrey's books. In
each of the many books in her Dragonriders of Pern series, she manages
to give a synopsis of what has occurred since the first book. Before I
realized it was a series, I read one of the Pern books out of order. The
background helped me understand who was who and what was what. After
that, although I read them in order, after about six of them (I think
there are twelve in the series so far), I didn't mind being refreshed
especially about the many characters. Didn't Brian Jacques do the same
thing in his Redwall Abbey series?
I think most people would like to read the HP books in sequence, but
unless they've purchased them, borrowing the books in order from friends
or the library might be difficult. Thats just IMHO.
