Well, being from the South (US), I've heard plenty of Southerners put on
British accents.... it can be pretty scary. :) I don't generally attempt
it myself, particularly not within the hearing of anyone else--it's a
complete failure.
But I think unless you've spent a considerable amount of time in a place,
you aren't likely to produce an accurate accent. A recognizable imitation,
possibly, but not the real thing. There are exceptions, I'm sure. I know a
lot of the Southern US accents that show up in movies are pretty horrible
and nothing like the real thing, though if you're not from the South,
you may not notice. And of course, there are many different Southern US
accents, as there are many different British accents.
Which brings us back to the HP movie... My untrained ear may not recognize
all the different British accents, but as Harry Potter and Hogwarts
are British, I'd like to see (and hear) the movie done accurately--with
British actors and actresses.
