Yes, much closer than modern British accents. It is said that Shakespeare
could make himself understood easily in Dublin, with some effort in
Chicago, and not at all in London.

Btw, ALBION'S SEED said that the Yankee twang of New England is a close
descendent of the Norfolk whine.
