When Lupin says, "Then Dumbledore became headmaster", I take this to
imply that Lupin was alive when D. became headmaster. Perhaps Lupin
is even a little older than Sirius because he was barred from entering
Hogwarts until Albus suceeded that old codger Dippet.

So I think D. becoming headmaster may be relatively recent.
