Finally finding time to reply to some old posts . . . .

That's why I don't buy into the argument that there are exact numbers
of students in each house in each year. If the Sorting Hat is going
by abilities, weaknesses & personality traits, it just won't be even
every year. I'm still not convinced that there are more than 3 girls
in Gryffindor in Harry's year (Hermione, Lavender & Pavarti as best I
can tell). I think we'd have heard by now if there were other girls in
Gryffindor. So, there are 8 Gryffindors that year. Who's to say that Fred,
George & Lee aren't the only Gryffindor males in their year?

The other problem with trying to calculate the student population in
this way is that JKR simply can't develop (or even mention in passing)
enough of the students in enough of the years to give anyone much of an
educated guess. IMHO.
