"I can't imagine the Sorting Hat telling
someone like Ron whose last name starts with a 'W' that he has to go
into Hufflepuff because the Gryffindor dorm is already full. ;)"

How do we actually know that the sorting hat does its sorting during
the sorting. It may get the names in advance and decide where to put
the students before they get there. The sorting then being a ritual,
for the amusement of all.

I dont actually believe my own theory but decided to say it anyway.

"So, there are 8 Gryffindors that year."

All the evidence of this sort points to the years being even smaller
than has been suggested.

"Who's to say that Fred, George & Lee aren't the only Gryffindor males
in their year?"

I would have thought that there must be some other boys in there
year. Otherwise we are left with 3 pratical jokers and no one to do
any work!
