<<As to the initial. In the papers today (or more correctly The Sunday
Mail - JKR's favourite paper)
there is a report saying that the K has been added to her initials to
appeal to more readers.>>
It would make sense, if she didn't have a middle name, to give her one: -
- There was reportedly a move to disguise Rowling's sex, as the
publishers felt that boys might not read a book written by a woman
(a bit daft, in retrospect).
- I can think of very few authors using one initial only - it lessens
the impact somewhat. Remember those classics by H Wells, J Tolkien,
E Forster, C Lewis, P James et al.
- Fans would end up calling her 'JR', and get her confused with Larry
Hagman on a regular basis.
Simon - is it the Sunday Mail then (a Scottish newspaper, I think)? I
thought it was the Mail on Sunday.
