Digging around, I uncovered details of St. Godric:-
"The St. Godric Songs. (British Museum Ms. Reg. V, F. VII.) These are
the earliest known songs in the English language. St. Godric died in
1170, so we may safely date these songs at approximately 1150. After a
varied career, evidently including piracy, Godric retired into Wales,
and spent the last forty or fifty years of his life as a hermit there."
Two things: -
Godric is clearly a very old name (there were also two Croyland Abbots
with the name Godric - unnecessary note: Croyland Abbey is near my
home town)
This reference to old songs makes me think of the Sorting Hat, which
apparently belonged to Godric Gryffindor. Perhaps the hat is really
about 850 years old and still trotting out the tunes, once a year,
like the head of Godric that used to be inside it!
