> Griffin or Gryffid - names associated with Irish or Welsh background? My
mother's ancestors came from Ireland -- her maiden name was Griffin.

Gryffith is a Welsh name, altho' I don't know why. An acquaintance with
mundane name Ward Griffith III chose as his SCA name Gryffith ap Grifith
ap Griffidd. I don't know if he's related at all to old-time filmmaker
D.W. Griffith or to the Colonel Griffith who gave his estate to the City
of Los Angeles (where it is now Griffith Park) in exchange for not being
tried for shooting his wife.

Meanwhile, the flag of Wales is a red dragon on a green (below the middle)
and white (above the middle) background. I can't remember the heraldic
definition of how to distinguish between dragon, griffin, and wyvern,
and I can't remember whether the critter on the flag is called dragon
or gryffin, but whichever it is called, it actually depicts a different
one of the three (dragon, gryffin, wyvern).
