I realize we are now on Chapter 3 but there are two things I haven't
been able to get off my mind; one each from the previous two chapters.
The first one has more to do with the readers than the book itself. For
some reason I'm really intrigued by the fact that people read the first
chapter and thought the boy seen near the Riddle house was someone other
than Tom Riddle jr. I just don't get it. We know who the victims are,
we know that Tom Riddle hated his father with a passion, we know he fits
the age and description. Why would anyone think of someone else? So I'd
be interested to hear from the people who did. And whether you've given
up the idea yet. (Just a reminder that Moody/Crouch jr. said later that
one of the things he and Voldemort shared was the great joy of killing
their own fathers.)
The second thing has to do with Sirius being the person that came
to Harry's mind when he was trying to think of an adult whom he could
confide in like a parent. I know that Sirius is his godfather and was
his father's best friend. But he's also the guy who played a potentially
fatal joke on Snape. It's not that I actually object (I loathe Snape)
but it was hardly the sign of a kind and generous person. More importantly
this is the guy who was willing to go over, under, or through the person
he was supposed to be protecting to get to the person he was supposed
to be protecting him from. And he had to be forcibly restrained from
Pettigrew after that. If it'd been me, the first person who would have
come to mind would have been someone who 1) I knew better; 2) had already
been confiding in; 3) obviously also cared for me; 4) kept his head in a
crisis. Of course he does have that one little flaw that shows up every
month but I still would have gone to Lupin. I have to admit that I was not
a big Sirius fan at the end of 3 and, although I do like him better now,
I still prefer Lupin. Of course I'm not Harry and neither am I creator of
this universe. Just wondering if anyone else had thought the same thing.

P.S. to Penny: I'm sure they're on your mental list but since they
weren't actually listed, please don't forget the rest of the Weasleys:
Arthur and Molly
