Hi:

Well, here's my spoiler warning & spoiler space for those who still need

Okay -- <<<I'm really intrigued by the fact that people read the first
chapter and thought the boy seen near the Riddle house was someone other
than Tom Riddle jr. I just don't get it. We know who the victims are,
we know that Tom Riddle hated his father with a passion, we know he fits
the age and description. Why would anyone think of someone else? So I'd
be interested to hear from the people who did.>>>

For me, it was a very fleeting thought that it might be Harry -- just the
part where the dark-haired teenage boy is first mentioned, I thought,
"Harry??" Then, of course, you learn more about it all, and within
seconds, I was thinking, "No. Definitely Tom Riddle Jr." Like you, I
can't imagine anyone *still* entertaining the notion that the kid was
anyone other than Tom Riddle Jr.

<<< Long objections to Sirius being the person Harry should have turned
to>>>>>>

Well, I should state my bias up front: I'm a huge Sirius fan!!! (Yes,
Carole (cj_bsm) and I are writing a fanfic that features Sirius
prominently so . . . there you go!). Now, of course, I *love* Remus
too! But, the basic point about not going to Remus is that I don't
think Lupin really left the door open for Harry to contact him. He
said something like "I've enjoyed teaching you; sorry we have to part,
but I'm sure we'll meet again." It was Sirius who said "Let me know if
ever you need me. Your owl will find me." And, he'd been in touch with
Sirius several times over the summer. Sirius sent him a birthday cake.

Remus was a close friend of James Potter as well, but Sirius was his
*best* friend. And, Sirius is Harry's godfather. He seems to have taken
the initiative to keep in touch with Harry, whereas Remus did not.

The "near fatal" trick Sirius played on Snape -- something tells me we
don't know the whole story on that yet.

And, I don't think the scuffle in the Shrieking Shack is an indication
that Sirius ever intended to hurt Harry, even to get to Pettigrew. He
was trying to restrain him, keep him (Harry) from hurting Sirius to the
point where Pettigrew could escape, etc. I think if you read that scene
in PoA carefully, it's clear to me anyway that Sirius was not trying to
hurt Harry. I sort of think he was trying to "neutralize" him and keep
Pettigrew from escaping again at the same time. Before that fight ever
happened, Sirius shows concern for Ron's leg.

<<And he had to be forcibly restrained from Pettigrew after that.>>>

Well, if you'd spent 12 yrs in Azkaban for crimes you didn't commit,
you'd be a bit short tempered too. <g>

He's hot-tempered .... but that's just part of his personality, and I
like him alot!
