when and where would they have met?
I'm pretty sure that Hogwart's makes a point of having Doubles classes
in every possible pair of Houses, so that all students in the same year
get a chance to meet each other.

whole school.
I pointed that out to Lee, who was not pleased about it. However, I'm sure
that there are non-House extracurricular activities going on, even if the
only one we ever saw was Gilderoy Lockhart's absurd fiasco of a dueling
club. There must be pick-up Quidditch games at school, not just at the
Weasley house. There must be oratory clubs and beetle collecting clubs.

not as handy as a common room where no teacher will come and bother you.
The teacher who is the Master of the House can come bother you in the
House common room.

outside their own houses. Couldn't they find plenty of interesting people
among their fellow house residents?
If you keep meeting someone and you really like them, you don't think
"Oh, I won't hang out with so-and-so anymore because I've got enough
friends already".
