I still think Dobby "turned him in" to the MoM, thus the written
warning. Maybe Dobby thought he could get Harry in enough trouble to keep
him from Hogwarts that way. Especially because it was NOT Harry that
did the magic when the pudding smashed... that was Dobby's spell, and
Harry got the reprimand. Why? As you mentioned, he never got a reprimand
for the other things he actually did, such as growing his hair back and
letting the snake loose in the zoo.
