Hi:
<I thought the Harry/Snape thing was because the "gang of four" almost
killed Snape in a practical joke and James--whom Snape hated and was
jealous of--saved him (POA).>
Well, we definitely know that is *one* reason why Snape would dislike
James Potter. And, maybe he has transferred some of his dislike to Harry
for that reason. But, that may not be the *only* reason he disliked James
& still dislikes Harry. Since JKR has said that the importance of all the
references to Harry having his mother's eyes will be made clear later, I
am theorizing that Snape was in love in Lily and that Harry's eyes remind
him of Lily (and his unrequited love for her). Just a theory, but it does
*seem* that Snape becomes most vicious when he's looked Harry in the face.
I agree that the Dursleys provide that "fairy tale" quality to the
stories. But, outside of a fairy tale (or a fantasy novel such as
the HP books!), a child who had that experience might *not* turn out
very well. Personally, I liked JoAnna's theory that Harry's parents'
love for him provided him with a moral compass and prevented him from
becoming disconnected, anti-social, etc. as a result of his treatment
by the Dursleys. That's a nice thought. :--)
