Question:
Does the British edition also title Dumbledore as "Chief Warlock?" If it
historically is an insult, this sounded curious.
Historically it certainly is, but you will still find the word in fairy
tales and fantasy books, though I think even there it usually has a
negative connotation, implying Dark Wizardry. Wizard, Sorcerer, Mage,
Magician all have a better connotation.
Someone who is using the word from a fairy tale context might not in
fact know the history of the word, but JK, with her immense sensitivity
to language, strikes me as someone who would.
Curious.
