I'd heard of Harry Potter before I began reading the books, because my
aunt is a third-grade teacher (now sixth-grade) who absolutely loved
the books and read them to her kids. They even did a Harry Potter play
in her classroom!

Anyway, I thought about reading one so I could discuss them with her,
but I really didn't act on my vague desire until January 2000. My mother
is a librarian, and I went to the library with her to help her catalogue
her books, and when we were getting ready to leave she handed me a
paperback copy of Sorcerer's Stone and asked, "Do you want to read some
Harry Potter?" I said, "What the heck, it's a 45-min. car ride home and I
have nothing better to do." So, I began to read, and by the time we got
home I could not put it down. I didn't even stop reading while walking
into the house (and I nearly stepped on my cat!). As soon as I got back
to college I went to barnesandnoble.com and ordered my own copies of SS,
CoS, and PoA. Now, I am eagerly and anxiously awaiting my copy of book 4!

BTW, I'm enjoying the "Anglocentric" posts as well. I've never been to
the UK (I've never seen the ocean or been overseas at all, actually)
but I dream of visiting London someday, perhaps during or after college.
