In the LA Times article, they quote Rowling :

"There is something in 'Sorcerer's Stone' [the first book] that is
absolutely crucial to the ending of book four. People will remember it,"
she said, declining to be more specific.

AAAAGGGGHHHHHH!! One tiny maddening little statement and I'm gonna be
awake all night, wondering.
