Hi:
I'll take a shot at some of these (I've wondered the same things myself
everytime I re-read PoA):
<-- When the boggart turns into the moon, why doesn't Lupin start
transforming?>
I would think maybe it has to be the *actual* moon for it to cause
transformation. A subquestion: what happens to a boggart if you are
unable to make it go away? Does it just follow you around in the form
that causes you great fright until you (or someone) get rid of it??
<-- How can it be that on that critical night Lupin forgot to take his
potion, *and* "left the Map running" (so that Snape saw it), *and*
suggested manacling *himself* to Pettigrew? Does the full moon also
erode his Better Judgement?>
Like Simon, I imagine that Lupin would have taken his potion in due
course if he'd just remained in his office a bit longer. But, when he saw
Black & Pettigrew on the map, his instinct was to run into the fray --
he forgot all about the potion in the excitement of all that. Same thing
for leaping up and leaving the Map in full view. And, as for manacling
himself to Pettigrew & Ron, it's easy to see that he would forget about it
being a full moon. He's just spent an hr or more in the Shrieking Shack,
hearing things that must have rocked his world so to speak.
<-- In the scene in Snape's office he says to Lupin "Don't you think
[Harry] got [the Map] *straight from the manufacturers*?!" The insinuation
being that Lupin gave Harry the Map himself. But how could Snape come to
such a conclusion unless he's aware of the Fab Four's secret nicknames,
and if he is, didn't he ever wonder where those nicknames came from?>
I've always been *very* puzzled by the reference to the
"manufacturers." If he did think Lupin gave Harry the Map, then why would
he fall for the "it's just a joke shop product, I'll take it & get rid
of it. We'll all be on our way now." No, if he really believed *Lupin*
was a manufacturer, he'd have thrown a fit and detained them. Maybe
he was just accusing Harry of consorting with the dark forces that had
created this Map (as Simon suggested). Very puzzling!
<-- Does anyone else wonder if Cho's bevavior toward Harry during the
Quidditch match (tailing him, coquettishly blocking him, etc.) is a grim
forshadowing of what their romantic relationship will be like?>
Yes, and since (a) I'm predisposed to dislike Cho inexplicably, and (b)
I'm in favor of Harry ending up with Hermione in the end -- I don't think
this is altogether bad. I think Cho is definitely his "Ms. Wrong." I
think she'll lead him a merry chase in Book 4, but I somehow think it
might end up being unrequited love for poor Harry. Or they'll date a
bit and she'll dump him.
