The Associated Press

ST. ANDREWS, Scotland (June 22, 2000 5:21 p.m. EDT
http://www.nandotimes.com) - J.K. Rowling, author of the magical Harry
Potter series, received an honorary doctorate Thursday for helping
millions of children discover "the pure joy of reading."

"Jo Rowling has shown that children's books are still capable of
capturing and enchanting an immense audience, irrespective of the
competing attractions of television, Nintendo, Gameboy and Pokemon,"
said spokeswoman Sue Cunningham of the University of St. Andrews,
Scotland's oldest university.

Rowling's three books about Harry Potter and his classmates at Hogwarts
school of wizardry have sold more than 37 million copies worldwide. She
was also recently named an Officer of the Order of British Empire.

The fourth Harry Potter book is due out July 8; its title and contents
have been kept secret. A movie is to start filming this year.
