I mentioned on the harrypotteranonymous list that it had occured to
me that the Four Houses of Hogwarts match with the ancient alchemical
tradition of Four Elements:
Gryffindor - Red - Lion - fire
Ravenclaw - Blue - Eagle - air
Hufflepuff - Yellow - Badger - earth
Slytherin - Green - Snake - water
(of course, to me Air is Yellow, Water is Blue, and Earth is Green,
but maybe people who don't live in Los Angeles aren't used to air
being yellow)

And my excuse for mentioning this is that your school's four houses
could also be matched to the elements:

Gryphons for air because they have wings and fly
Lions for fire - probably because the lion is a solar symbol, or maybe
just that its mane can easily be drawn to look like flames
Dragons for water
Stags for earth.
