A picture would definately be necessary, I'd say, since the hints tell
you about sizes and positions. I tried to solve it, but couldn't without
a picture or diagram, and I'm pretty good at logic puzzles. However,
I might be wrong about this - anyone else able to confirm or deny this?

As far as the origin, I'd say Snape himself. He's no dummy, and it's
his style of puzzle. Clever, and quite deadly if you screw up. ;)
