LUPIN: Yes, he's one of my favorites also! I was sad to see him go, and I
sincerely hope we will see more of him (he does tell Harry that he's sure
they'll meet again). He'll be a hard act to follow as Defense Against the
Dark Arts instructor. I'm re-reading POA right now. It's my favorite so
far also, largely because of Lupin and Black and their concern for Harry
(and those twisting plot curves that keep you in suspense for the last
150 pages or so!).
JAMES POTTER: I wonder if the line "I'll hold Him off" is indicative
that the Potters knew Voldemort was after Harry specifically. It could
simply mean that James hoped to buy Lily time to take Harry and run,
thereby saving them both. But that line could arguably mean that James
knew Voldemort wasn't *after* him or Lily but was targeting Harry. I
guess we definitely don't know at this point.
Dumbledore apparently tipped off the Potters that Voldemort was after
*them* though (this was mentioned in the conversation Harry, Ron &
Hermione overheard in Hogsmeade). That seems to indicate the opposite:
that Voldemort was after them. Since we know it wasn't Lily he cared
about, maybe it was both James & Harry. But, curiously, we learned in
that same conversation that he was *after* the Potters for "about a
year" before the attack on them. Harry was 15 months at the time of the
attack. Could it be that Harry's birth was what triggered Voldemort's
interest in the Potters?
I agree that James & Lily would *not* send Harry away. I can't imagine
that they, as his parents, would have entrusted his safety to others.
I was so sad to think about what might have happened if Hagrid *had*
given Harry to Sirius Black instead of taking him to Dumbledore on
Privet Drive. Sirius might have concentrated on raising Harry and not
ever sought revenge against Pettigrew. What a different childhood Harry
would have had!
