<What I want to know, from the tapes, is how are Gryffindor and Slytherin
pronounced? Is the "Y" pronounced like a long or short "I"? I've always
pronounced both with the short "I", but I'm curious how the audios do.>

It's pronounced with the short "i". And it's such fun listening to Jim
Dale say them. He rolls his "r"s on Gryffindor with such flourish that
you know they are the good guys. And Slytherin he says with complete
contempt so it's obvious they are the "bad" guys.
I also find that just by listening to the stories that I'm catching so
much more than I did than by reading them. For example, Hagrid mentions
that he bought Fluffy from some Greek man at the pub. (Remember Cerberus
from Greek mythology?) And the most obvious occurred just listening to
the description of Harry's dream of Quirrell's turban, that I was slapping
my forehead and saying "Of course! I can't believe we all missed that!"
On another note, my husband was passing by the building construction
site of the new Scholastic headquarters on Broadway in Manhattan the
other day. And on the wooden fencing around the site was a painting of
Harry Potter with the message, "Future Home of Scholastic, publishers
of Harry Potter."
