Hello, me again.

This time, I thought I'd do both a cryptogram (only one this time)
and a logic puzzle.

Should you decide to solve these, e-mail me with the answers, or if you
are stuck, with any questions. My address is melaniem68 at yahoo.com.

With each puzzle, I've provided instructions and a hint or two.

Good luck.

Melanie

CRYPTOGRAM

Below is a quote from one of the books, along with the person who
said it. Each letter within the quote has been changed to a different
letter. Each letter translates the same as the others of its kind (for
example, if one M translates to A, all the M's are also A).

HINT: Try to figure out the name of the speaker early on. Once those
letters have been figured out, it will fill in quite a bit of the rest
of the puzzle.

LOGIC PUZZLE

The introduction should be self-explanatory, as far as directions
go. But here are a few hints for those unfamiliar with logic problems
(and reminders for those who are).

HINT: Make up a chart to keep track of what you've figured out so far. Or
go high-tech and use a spreadsheet program, like Excel, Quattro Pro
or Lotus.

HINT: Do not make ANY assumptions beyond what's provided in the puzzle
itself (e.g., which characters are more likely to date from which house,
how each character is most likely to meet a boyfriend or girlfriend,
etc). These assumptions may be right, but then again...

HINT: Take note of gender-specific pronouns. In this puzzle, they may
narrow the field.

Well, here's the puzzle itself:

PROM TIME, 1998

Harry and his friends, Ron and Hermione had a magical time at the
1998 Hogwarts Prom. Ron and Hermione attended together, while Harry
took Ron's sister, Ginny. As the Gryffindor seventh-years (plus Ginny)
left their common room for the Great Hall, the two couples noticed that
they were the only ones already paired off. Their five housemates (two
of whom (Lavender and Pavarti) were girls, and three of whom (Dean,
Neville and Seamus) were guys) all had dates from other houses, whom
they planned to meet at the dance. Two of the dates were Ravenclaws;
two were Hufflepuffs; one even went with a Slytherin! Each Gryffindor
had a date of the opposite sex, but the dates' names (Chris, Kelly,
Pat, Robin and Sam) are gender-neutral. From the clues below, can you
figure out the name and house of each Gryffindor's date, and how each
one became acquainted with his/her date?

1) The five dates were: Kelly, two Ravenclaw girls, Pavarti's date, and
the one who met his/her date at a Quidditch match. (Note: Each item on
this list represents one person, except where otherwise noted. No two
items represent the same person. The same goes for the next two clues.)

2) The two Gryffindor girls (besides Hermione and Ginny, of course)
were: Pat's date, and the one who met her date the previous summer,
when they both held jobs on Diagon Alley.

3) The three Gryffindor boys (other than Harry and Ron) were: Seamus,
Sam's date, and the one who met his date when they were both confined
to the hospital wing.

4) Lavender's date belonged to the same house as Neville's.

5) The Slytherin got to know his Gryffindor date when they were stuck
in the same compartment on the Hogwarts Express.

6) Chris met her Gryffindor date when they were assigned as partners in
a class project.
