The "Dog" is just over Harry's left arm. However, I think I'm going
back to my original theory. It looks like it has yellow eyes with black
vertical slits for pupils... rather like a big cat.

I don't think the boy on the right is a Weasley at all. While Hermione
on the front of Prisoner had sort of dark reddish hair, the cover showing
Weasley's, Chamber of Secrets, show them as having bright orange hair.

Cutting these artists some slack for taking artistic license ... the cat
in the window as we're flying out of the underground chamber of Secrets,
they are obviously a reasonable amount of the detail.

The mystery boy on the cover has an almost aristocratic air to
him. Perhaps its that kid who was going to Eton before getting his
Hogwarts letter. The picture makes him look older than Harry.

The man on the left has a stealthy look. Not at all what I picture Snape
looking like. My first thought when I saw him was that he was a healthy
Sirius Black.
