It all depends Vikar25. I personally don't think that cutthroat ambition
leads to happiness. But on the other hand, it could be argued that there
are many people who have been led to "greatness" (which could just mean
wealth and fame but also could mean great intellectual and creative
accomplishment-- say, painting the Sistine Chapel ceiling...) by an
overwhelming and single-minded focus on their individual vision. They
have a drive to excel.

The main thing is that Slytherin is not necessarily evil: the Slytherin
personality simply is ambitious and thinks big-- and has certain blind
spots and weaknesses, which might tempt them to make a Faustian deal
with the Dark Lord, believing that the ends justify the means. Ambition
can be good-- but it can also go very wrong.
