But on the other hand, it could be argued that there are many people
who have been led to "greatness" (which could just mean wealth and fame
but also could mean great intellectual and creative accomplishment--
say, painting the Sistine Chapel ceiling...) by an overwhelming and
single-minded focus on their individual vision. They have a drive
to excel.

Precisely. Examples of "good" ambition would be Percy Weasley and
Hermione. Both are very ambitious -- especially Percy, whose goal is
to be the Minister of Magic. Cornelius Fudge notwithstanding (I still
believe that man is one twig short of a broomstick), I assume that the
Minister of Magic has to be a VERY talented wizard/witch. After all,
Dumbledore was wanted for the position. Percy's talent could be used for
evil -- IF HE CHOSE. As Dumbledore said in CoS, it is our choices who
make us who we are, which is why Harry is a true Gryffindor. However, he
could just as easily stayed on on the good side if he was in Slytherin,
as long as he'd resisted negative influences and chose to be a good
wizard. It's not Slytherin or ambition that makes evil wizards; it's
their choices that make them such.

Okay, I think I'm done rambling now... :)

BTW, on the website of the Unofficial Harry Potter Fan Club, there's a
recent AOL chat transcript with J.K. Rowling, and in it she says the the
title of book #4 is NOT "Harry Potter and the Doomspell Tournament." She
also says that both the title and cover design are being kept under
wraps. So, I agree that the amazon.com cover is probably just a
compilation of the last three books, with the mystery girl thrown in to
entice us. :)
