<Incidentally, did anyone else have four houses at school?>

I did, in junior high. The seventh grade (age-equivalent of Hogwarts 2nd
year) was divided into Blue Dynasty and Golden Apes. The eighth grade
(which would be 3rd year at Hogwarts) was divided into Purple Triumphs
and Red Bulls. Though we had a few competitions with all four houses,
mostly we stayed within grades.

In high school, the four grades did the job (sort of). There wasn't a
lot of competition between them, but it was convenient when we needed
to divide into smaller groups.

My high school also had a Scottish theme. Each freshman class (like
Hogwarts 4th year) voted on a tartan (plaid pattern) to represent us. We
were then given the clan name to match the tartan, and kept that clan
name and tartan all four years. So, cheesy as it sounds, the classes were
often announce as, for example Clan Douglas, in place of "freshmen" or
"Class of '86".
