Thanks for responding to all my questions!

The houses at my old school were rather like the ones at Hogwarts, in
that things were very competitive and we gained points for doing well in
various areas/competitions, which were added up at the end of the year. I
think it was quite a common feature of the British grammar school system.

I remember that Dragons tended to be more ruthless than the other
houses. I can't imagine why, because we chose the houses ourselves (no
sorting hat, unfortunately), but most of the bullies I knew seemed to
be in Dragons (cf. Slytherin, I guess) and the sporty people tended to
go for Lions. Nice people, like me, chose Gryphons...
