We don't KNOW that it's his pride (we don't know at all WHY), it's 
just that Harry stated that it was his pride.

I'm a naive fool who expects everything to be as it appears. Fudge 
is such an idiot that he snobbishly believes that rich and high-class 
people like the Malfoys couldn't possibly have been Death Eaters 
voluntarily (Lucius had got off by claiming that he had been 
bewitched) and he also sucks up to them to get some of their wealth 
(for good causes like the hospital: we haven't heard of election 
campaigns requiring campaign contributions.
