I think you've forgotten Fleur's sister, Gabrielle. It was 
mainly because of her that he was the last to return (not to mention 
almost drowned). His "moral fibre" was exemplified precisely by 
helping a person who was completely UNrelated to him, and moreover, 
WAS related to one of his competitors.
