Marie de Champagne (patronness of Chretien de Troyes, IIRC daughter
of Henri IV and Catherine de Medici) had a Court of Love in her royal
court. Insane tho' it sounds, some cases were actually tried. My
mother told me of one in which a knight sued a lady to get a court
order that she must love him. Because when he had asked for her love,
she told him that she loved another man, but if she ever ceased to
love that man, then she would love the plaintiff. His argument now
was that the lady had married her former beloved, and therefore she
no longer loves him because love is not possible in marriage, and
therefore she must keep her promise to the plaintiff.
