This has undoubtedly been said already, but if Dumbledore is using Snape as
a double agent against Voldemort, he would surely not want him in the DADA
position.  IMO, Snape would find it more difficult to persuade Voldemort
that he was prepared to betray Dumbledore if he was teaching the students
Defence Against The Dark Arts rather than Potions.  That said, I'm sure
Snape would like nothing better than to teach DADA and the students may have
picked up on this without realising why Dumbledore keeps overlooking him for
the post.
