HouseElves orientation/indoctrination/way of being is that they keep 
their master's secrets. Malfoy complacently assumed that Dobby would 
do so.

It's not at all far fetched -- when you consider that Dobby is one of 
the only house elves to ever get paid -- that he would decide to
save Harry Potter (the Boy Who Lived!) from yet another plot to 
destroy him.

It will be fun to learn more about House Elves....
